George Mason University has a very cool site entitled Building the Washington Metro that “tells the story of the Washington Metro, a 103-mile rapid transit system serving Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia.” The site is very thorough and well-laid out, with sections devoted to the planning, construction, engineering, architecture, and operation of the Metro. As a Baltimore/Washington native, I’ve been on the Metro many times, and it’s pretty nice compared to some of the other similar systems I’ve been on.
