Basically, it was initially thought that if an aircraft released a nuke while on the vertical leg of an Immelman turn, it could complete the change-of-direction maneuver and more easily avoid the ensuing blast since it was already heading back in the direction it came from. In reality it takes a lot more than an Immelman to outrun a nuclear blast.
