Uncyclopedia

I’ve often extolled the virtues of Wikipedia, a free online collaborative encyclopedia. Well, Uncyclopedia is nothing like that; it’s “an encyclopedia full of misinformation and utter lies. It’s sort of like Congress. It serves absolutely no purpose, so feel free to add to the misinformation right now!” Some funny stuff there…

The Doctor Demento Show

Speaking of parody songs, TheDoctorDementoShow.com is the ultimate fan site:

This will be a user-supported site with many features directed at allowing the users to comment on and promote their favorite artists & songs, listen to old shows online, share trivia, etc.

As of this post, 95% of the collector’s 1,338 Doctor Demento shows were online. Wow…

The Not Al Page

Although “Weird Al” Yankovic is rightly associated with parody songs, not every parody song out there can be blamed on attributed to him. Someone has tried to address this and created The Not Al Page:

In a possibly vain attempt to restore some bit of honour to his name, I have compiled a list of songs that appear in MP3 format on the internet that Weird Al Yankovic has never performed yet bear his name. If you ever happen to make it to this page, do the community a huge favour and go through your MP3 list (or any other kind of music list, for that matter) looking for filenames that associate Weird Al and any of the song titles below. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later.

Although the list was fairly comprehensive, I did see that one parody song was missing: “Rock The Catbox.” I’ve been trying to track this one down for a long time, and all I know is that it’s not a “Weird Al” song… 😉

Google Desktop Search 1.0

googleSlashdot and BetaNews report that Google Desktop Search has moved out of beta with the release of version 1.0. The new version now supports Firefox and Thunderbird, and plug-ins are available for Trillian and Adobe PDF scanned documents. Additionally, Google has released an SDK to allow developers to write their own plug-ins. The screenshots page shows how Google Desktop Search integrates into the taskbar or floats as a separate taskbar. This version is a definite improvement over the Beta version, and I can see this being very useful.

New York Public Library Digital Gallery

The NYPL Digital GalleryNew York Public Library Digital Gallery “provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more.” Very cool…

Historian Claims Nazis Did Nuclear Tests

German historian Rainer Karlsch is about to publish the book Hitlers Bombe (Hitler’s Bomb), in which he claims that “Nazi scientists tested ‘nuclear bombs’ in 1944 and 1945 on the Baltic island of Ruegen and in central Germany under the supervision of the SS, but they were not ready to be deployed before the war ended.” Karlsch reportedly “declined to give details or answer further questions until the book is launched on March 14,” but many historians are already voicing their doubts. I’m interested to hear more about this either way…
