beer barrel R2-D2

~amoebabloke's antique d2 project 8 is pretty damn cool...

The YouTube video People in Order is:
part of a series of short films that assembles the people of Britain in a given order. In just 3 minutes, we meet 100 different people who are arranged according to their age, starting from age 1.

googleFor those of you that frequent Google News and haven't customized it yet, you should, as there is a new feature entitled Google Local News. It allows you to input your location of choice and then adds a news section tailored to that region. Pretty cool...

For those of you that are (like me) fans of the movie Lost In Translation, you were probably left wondering what Bob Harris (Bill Murray) whispered to Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) at the end of the movie. Well, wonder no more. Someone has digitally massaged the dialogue in that scene to the point where you can hear what he said. Check out the YouTube video here, unless you'd like to leave it to your imagination. I was quite torn and almost didn't listen, but in the end I relented and don't think it's too much of a spoiler...

Science Experiment

There are some real "winners" in this photographic showcase of science experiments. One of my favorites is above...

Check out this YouTube video of a three-year-old explaining the plot of Star Wars.

You've got to check out this video. :-)

Silent Service

Check out this feature detailing the History Of Water Renderings In Computer Games. It's in German, but it's mostly images anyway. Above is a screencap of Silent Service, a Commodore 64 game from 1985. Things have changed a bit since then...

World Oil Map

The Middle East has a lot of oil! That's no revelation, but this map projection sizes countries according to their amount of oil, depicting just how much that holds true.

So, you want to be an ARCADE champion? chronicles "one man's quest to play all 4,000 games in the Twin Galaxies world records book alphabetically." Worth a read, although it's only sporadically updated, and he's only up to Asteroids Deluxe so far.

You have got to check out this video for NBC's 60th Anniversary Celebration back in 1986:
Here is a case-in-point when people say "they don't make them like they used to:" a number performed by a variety of NBC's "Family" members on their 60th Anniversary Celebration. This camp classic is a parody/homage/reworking of the song "Family" from the musical Dreamgirls and features Barbara Eden, Nell Carter, Charlotte Rae, Punky Brewster (Soleil Moon Frye), Alfonso Ribeiro, Marla Gibbs, and Bea Arthur.
Craptastically delicious!

Star WarsThe Star Wars universe is about to expand further, as there is going to be a TV series entitled The Clone Wars that will be preceded by a feature-length movie released in theaters. Supposedly they will take place between Episodes II and III, expanding on the events in the Clone Wars that happened between movies. The premise sounds good, but I'm not so sure about the CGI animation. Check out this video preview and see what you think...

In case you haven't come across it yet, there is a new trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I'm really looking forward to this one, although we'll have to see whether Harrison Ford can still carry an action movie...

Also, I came across a really nice web site for all things Indiana Jones, TheRaider.net. Check it out...

Harold and Kumar 2 poster

I've been psyched about a Harold and Kumar sequel ever since I first heard about it, but the poster above sealed the deal for me... :-)

The 56 geeks poster is hilarious; check it out on flickr...

Equinational Projection

strange maps posts about The Reeves (Equinational) Projection map of the world, in which every country is the same size. Pretty interesting...

Virginia Heffernan of the New York Times noted something interesting about the DVD releases of Sesame Street: a warning reading "These early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grown-ups, and may not suit the needs of today’s preschool child." WTF?! NPR also weighed in with a story. This is just wrong...

Steam Trek is a fun Steampunk interpretation of Star Trek...

The World Freedom Atlas is:
a geovisualization tool for world statistics. It was designed for social scientists, journalists, NGO/IGO workers, and others who wish to have a better understanding of issues of freedom, democracy, human rights, and good governance. It covers the years 1990-2006.

Those of you who have ridden the DC Metro may have seen the work of Cool "Disco" Dan, one of the most prolific graffiti artists of Washington, DC. I came across a great MetaFilter post that linked to an interview with him (YouTube video, a graffiti.org featured artist gallery, and a Washington City Paper article entitled "The Last of Cool 'Disco' Dan?" lamenting the fact that his art is all but gone. I'm glad I caught that post...

Lord Of The RingsMy earlier report that Peter Jackson would direct two Hobbit movies was a bit erroneous; he is actually going to executive produce. New is just out, however, that Guillermo Del Toro will direct the movies, which is quite exciting. Del Toro is most recently known for the movies Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy (among others), and I think that this collaboration could make for some great movies.

FirstShowing.net's feature Why 2008 Will Be An Awesome Year For Movies has some overlap with my previous post about the 20 most anticipated films of 2008. Still, after reading that list I'm looking forward to a lot more movies this year...
