Most of you have probably heard that the NHL has cancelled the entire season after failing to resolve the expired Collective Bargaining Agreement between the owners and players; an interview with Players Association Executive Director Bob Goodenow has some more details.
Considering how long this has dragged on, I'm not at all surprised that it has come to this, but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it. I'm not going to get into the blame game over why this happened, as there are cases to be made against both sides. However, I think the players and owners are equally delusional about what this will do to their already dwindling market share, and they should have both taken greater steps to ensure that this didn't happen. People are comparing a possible fan backlash to the one that happened to Major League Baseball after 1994, but I think that this will be much worse, as the NHL's fan base is a lot smaller to begin with and has been rapidly losing ground. It'll be interesting to see what happens next year... |
