{"id":14649,"date":"2003-08-13T11:21:00","date_gmt":"2003-08-13T11:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2003\/08\/13\/earworms\/"},"modified":"2003-08-13T11:21:00","modified_gmt":"2003-08-13T11:21:00","slug":"earworms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2003\/08\/13\/earworms\/","title":{"rendered":"Earworms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>SFGate.com<\/i> reports on the research of James Kellaris of the University of Cincinnati, who has found that &ldquo;some 98 percent of listeners were at one time or another bothered by a tune that wouldn&rsquo;t leave their heads.&rdquo;  He has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2003\/08\/12\/MN129881.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">dubbed this phenomenon an &ldquo;earworm,&rdquo;<\/a> from the German <i>ohrwurm<\/i> to &ldquo;convey the parasitic nature of the travel of songs into their listeners&rsquo; ears, only to then get lodged and played on mental continuum.&rdquo;  I can definitely attest to this affliction, since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/archive\/2003_08_10_archive.html#106073928154578776\" target=\"_blank\">as recently as yesterday<\/a> I was ranting about how the commercialized version of Journey&rsquo;s &ldquo;Any Way You Want It&rdquo; has mind-numbingly ingrained itself into my psyche, to the point of making one of my favorite Journey tunes unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>The article goes on to point out some &ldquo;common offenders;&rdquo; if you&rsquo;re susceptible to this kind of thing you may want to skip this list: \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the Kit-Kat jingle (&ldquo;Gimme a break&rdquo;)<br \/>\n<br \/>&ldquo;Who Let the Dogs Out&rdquo;<br \/>\n<br \/>Queen&rsquo;s &ldquo;We Will Rock You&rdquo;<br \/>\n<br \/>the Theme To &ldquo;Mission: Impossible&rdquo;<br \/>\n<br \/>&ldquo;YMCA&rdquo;<br \/>\n<br \/>&ldquo;Whoomp, There It Is&rdquo;<br \/>\n<br \/>&ldquo;The Lion Sleeps Tonight&rdquo;<br \/>\n<br \/>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a Small World After All&rdquo;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I mentioned, I know that I&rsquo;m very susceptible to this kind of thing; right now, I&rsquo;m replaying Coldplay&rsquo;s &ldquo;Clocks&rdquo; in my head after hearing it on the way to work.
