{"id":13221,"date":"2005-09-21T22:40:00","date_gmt":"2005-09-21T22:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/09\/21\/google-earth-stuff\/"},"modified":"2005-09-21T22:40:00","modified_gmt":"2005-09-21T22:40:00","slug":"google-earth-stuff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/09\/21\/google-earth-stuff\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Earth Stuff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" alt=\"Google\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blogicons\/google.gif\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/earth.google.com\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Google Earth<\/i><\/a> continues to add new features, and users continue to concoct new, cool hacks and mashups.<\/p>\n<p>In the newest version, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gearthblog.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/09\/500_national_ge.html\" target=\"_blank\">&ldquo;National Geographic Magazine&rdquo; layer<\/a> is included (and turned on by default, I believe) that includes &ldquo;500 National Geographic Africa Flyover Images,&rdquo; as well as links to even more web content.  The flyovers are extremely high-resolution, and the links to associated content make this addition that much more compelling.<\/p>\n<p>With all of the recent hurricane activity, <i>Google Earth Blog<\/i> reports on an interesting addition that allows you to superimpose the tracks of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gearthblog.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/08\/all_atlantic_hu.html\" target=\"_blank\">all Atlantic hurricanes from 1851 to present<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/bbs.keyhole.com\/ubb\/showthreaded.php\/Cat\/0\/Number\/43357\/page\/vc\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Seabury announced<\/a> that he is offering <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulseabury.com\/storms.html\" target=\"_blank\">links by decade<\/a> that allow you to view individual tracks of storms by year and name.<\/p>\n<p><i>Google Earth Blog<\/i> also reports on another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gearthblog.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/09\/hurricane_phill.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hurricane Tracker<\/a> that concentrates on current and recent hurricanes, this time depicting tracks of storms all over the globe with links to satellite photos.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <i>Google Earth Blog<\/i> also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gearthblog.com\/blog\/archives\/2005\/09\/placeopedia_lin.html\" target=\"_blank\">mentions PlaceOpedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A new web site was announced last week which allows people to georeference WikiPedia articles. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a> is one of the grandest resources of information on the planet, created by the people for the people around the world (it&rsquo;s available in at least 10 languages). The new web site is called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.placeopedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">PlaceOpedia<\/a>. PlaceOpedia uses a slick Google Maps mashup interface to allow you to view &ldquo;placemarks&rdquo; of places linked to Wikipedia articles. Anyone can create a link (just like in WikiPedia, anyone can write or edit a story).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is a lot of cool stuff here.<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&rsquo;t <a href=\"http:\/\/kh.google.com\/download\/earth\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">downloaded <i>Google Earth<\/i><\/a> yet, you really should (it&rsquo;s free!).
