{"id":7834,"date":"2010-09-28T11:49:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-28T11:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/end-of-the-road-for-xmarks-xmarks-a-popular\/"},"modified":"2018-12-11T01:21:49","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T01:21:49","slug":"end-of-the-road-for-xmarks-xmarks-a-popular","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/end-of-the-road-for-xmarks-xmarks-a-popular\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-7834 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2010\/09\/28\/end-of-the-road-for-xmarks-xmarks-a-popular\/attachment\/7835\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"105\" height=\"122\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/tumblr_l9ggv62qQ51qzxaqho1_250.png\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.xmarks.com\/?p=1886\" target=\"_blank\">End of the Road for Xmarks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Xmarks, a popular web-based bookmark synchronization service, is set to close its doors within 90 days. \u00a0I&rsquo;m very disappointed to hear this, as I consider Xmarks an indispensable service that I use daily to ensure that my bookmarks are synchronized between my work and home computers. \u00a0Xmarks also allowed me to access my bookmarks anywhere where I had Internet access, a feature that often helped me retrieve a bookmark that I just couldn&rsquo;t remember and\/or Google properly.<\/p>\n<p>Xmarks has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmarks.com\/about\/shutdown\" target=\"_blank\">nice page detailing alternatives<\/a>, but I have a feeling that they won&rsquo;t be as seamless as I&rsquo;d like. \u00a0\ud83d\ude41 \u00a0It seems that I&rsquo;ll need to revisit the built-in syncing that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/chrome\/bin\/answer.py?answer=165139\" target=\"_blank\">Chrome<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.com\/firefox\/sync\/\" target=\"_blank\">Firefox<\/a> offer. \u00a0I&rsquo;ve used Firefox Weave, the precursor to the current Firefox Sync, before and was underwhelmed with how it handled duplicates, but that was admittedly a while ago and I&rsquo;m hoping that it&rsquo;s improved. \u00a0In my experience, Chrome&rsquo;s built-in sync of extensions, settings, and themes has worked fairly well, so I&rsquo;m hoping that the bookmark synchronization is equally robust.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, I may now be forced to commit to using either Firefox or Chrome; Xmarks add-ons were available on both browsers and not only allowed me to synchronize my bookmarks between computers, but also between different browsers on different computers. \u00a0I&rsquo;m a long-time Firefox user and fan, but as of late it seems slightly sluggish; perhaps the upcoming version 4 will change that. \u00a0In comparison,\u00a0Chrome is extremely speedy and much more stable, but it still lacks customization options and some key features that have made me hesitate to fully commit to using it as my default browser. \u00a0One of the most glaring omissions is &ldquo;print preview,&rdquo;
