{"id":15508,"date":"2002-10-08T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2002-10-08T11:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2002\/10\/08\/the-largest-object-since-pluto-was-discovered-in\/"},"modified":"2002-10-08T11:05:00","modified_gmt":"2002-10-08T11:05:00","slug":"the-largest-object-since-pluto-was-discovered-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2002\/10\/08\/the-largest-object-since-pluto-was-discovered-in\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/sci\/tech\/2306945.stm\" target=\"_blank\">largest object since Pluto was discovered<\/a> in 1930 has been unofficially named Quaoar (pronounced KWAH-o-ar) after &ldquo;the creation myth of the Tongva people who inhabited the Los Angeles area before the arrival of the Spanish and other European settlers.&rdquo;  The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2002\/10\/1003_021007_quaoar.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kuiper Belt Object is just over half the diameter of Pluto<\/a> and has a period of revolution about the Sun of 288 years.  This is a very interesting discovery, but something has to be done about that name!  Officially, the designation is 2002 LM60 and the International Astronomical Union will vote on its official name in a couple of months.
