{"id":13439,"date":"2005-06-02T15:21:00","date_gmt":"2005-06-02T15:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/06\/02\/bbs-the-documentary\/"},"modified":"2005-06-02T15:21:00","modified_gmt":"2005-06-02T15:21:00","slug":"bbs-the-documentary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/06\/02\/bbs-the-documentary\/","title":{"rendered":"BBS: The Documentary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before the Interweb became ubiquitous, getting &ldquo;online&rdquo; meant dialing into <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bbs\" target=\"_blank\">Bulletin Board Systems<\/a> (BBSes) with modems, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ascii\" target=\"_blank\">ASCII<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Graphical_user_interface\" target=\"_blank\">GUI<\/a>s and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ASCII_art\" target=\"_blank\">art<\/a> were cutting edge technology.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsdocumentary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">BBS: The Documentary<\/a> is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a mini-series of 8 episodes about the history of the BBS, [and] is now available. Spanning 3 DVDs and totalling five and a half hours, this documentary is actually eight documentaries about different aspects of this important story in the annals of computer history.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I remember playing around on BBSes on my Commodore, and to a lesser extent on my early PCs.  Things were a lot simpler then&hellip;<\/p>\n<p>Besides more details related to the documentary, the site has a lot of other interesting information, including a subsite called <a href=\"http:\/\/textfiles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Textfiles.com<\/a> that is an amazing archive of things you would find on a BBS.  There is a lot to see there, so I suggest you check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/textfiles.com\/100\/\" target=\"_blank\">Top 100 Textfiles<\/a> to get a flavor for what&rsquo;s available.  Man, this takes me back&hellip;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> Jason Scott, author of the documentary, has a great post in which he discusses his decision to <a href=\"http:\/\/ascii.textfiles.com\/archives\/000123.html\" target=\"_blank\">release the documentary under a Creative Commons License<\/a>.  His attitude is extremely refreshing, and although I was pretty much set on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbsdocumentary.com\/order\/\" target=\"_blank\">buying the DVD set<\/a>, I am definitely going to now.
