{"id":13347,"date":"2005-07-05T17:56:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-05T17:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/07\/05\/terroir-its-not-just-for-france-anymore\/"},"modified":"2005-07-05T17:56:00","modified_gmt":"2005-07-05T17:56:00","slug":"terroir-its-not-just-for-france-anymore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/07\/05\/terroir-its-not-just-for-france-anymore\/","title":{"rendered":"Terroir: It&#8217;s Not Just For France Anymore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>SFGate.com<\/i> recalls George Taber&rsquo;s 1976 &ldquo;filler article&rdquo; in <i>Time<\/i> magazine about &ldquo;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2005\/06\/16\/WIGFFD8K231.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">The Paris Tasting<\/a>&rdquo; that &ldquo;revolutionized wine&rdquo;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Taber&rsquo;s news brief &ndash; about French judges choosing a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay from Napa Valley as superior to the best from their mother country in a blind tasting in Paris &ndash; continues to have impact around the wine world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, up to the time of that tasting, one of the biggest misconceptions in the oenological world was that only France had the right <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terroir\" target=\"_blank\"><i>terroir<\/i><\/a>, &ldquo;the sum of the effects that the environment has on the vines which produce a particular wine,&rdquo; to make great wines.  &ldquo;After the Paris tasting, [it was] learned there are good soils everywhere &ndash; California, Australia, Chile.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>I am by no means a wine connoisseur (more of a beer man), but I have enjoyed some <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiraz_grape\" target=\"_blank\">Shiraz<\/a> wines that I&rsquo;ve tried.
