{"id":13343,"date":"2005-07-06T12:21:00","date_gmt":"2005-07-06T12:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/07\/06\/deep-impact\/"},"modified":"2005-07-06T12:21:00","modified_gmt":"2005-07-06T12:21:00","slug":"deep-impact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blog\/2005\/07\/06\/deep-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"Deep Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/deepimpact.jpl.nasa.gov\/home\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" alt=\"NASA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.driko.org\/blogicons\/nasa.jpg\" \/><\/a>I&rsquo;m sure that most of you have heard about the success of NASA&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/deepimpact.jpl.nasa.gov\/home\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Deep Impact<\/a> mission, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/deepimpact\/media\/deepimpact-070205.html\" target=\"_blank\">fired an &ldquo;impactor&rdquo; satellite at the comet Tempel 1 at 23,000 mph<\/a> to study the debris generated by the impact.  The <i>Astronomy Photo Of The Day<\/i> pages for yesterday and today have some nice <a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap050706.html\" target=\"_blank\">&ldquo;before&rdquo;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap050705.html\" target=\"_blank\">&ldquo;after&rdquo;<\/a> shots of the comet.  By all accounts, the mission was a resounding success, although it could take years to analyze all of the data.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is a somewhat disturbing development that could jeopardize this success.
