Star Trek Enterprise Designer Dies

NCC-1701 EnterpriseThe Official Star Trek site reports that “Walter ‘Matt’ Jefferies, the art director who designed the original U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 for Gene Roddenberry in the 1960’s, passed away early this morning.” A BBC article on Jefferies points out that “Although conceived in the years before space flight became common, the overall shape of the Enterprise has remained close to [his] first vision, through 10 films and five TV series… As a tribute to the designer’s creation, access tunnels in the Enterprise were named ‘Jefferies tubes.’” It is a testament to Jefferies’ vision that his iconic design remains instantly recognizable, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

“Legislated Nostalgia” and “Retro” Advertising

Metroactive features an interesting article covering the seemingly recent development of using ‘80s icons in advertising. The article is a pretty thorough, although somewhat too analytical look at what drives this form of advertising, but it does have some valid points. And it has Mr. T. 🙂 As the article points out,

‘Social experts say much of the appeal of nostalgia stems from a longing for a return to simpler times.’ Well, as third-graders everywhere would say, ‘Duh.’ Nostalgia marketing isn’t exactly subtle. It tugs at the basest emotional nerve center: happy memories of childhood.

I found it interesting that Douglas Coupland coined the term “legislated nostalgia,” which refers to “nostalgic images or ideas presented in such a way that even people who weren’t yet born seem to ‘remember’ that time,” which explains why kids who were barely around in the ’80s have latched onto these icons as their own. Get yer own memories, dammit… :-p

Gallery of Fluid Mechanics

water dropletOK, I may be an aerospace engineer geek, but after visiting the Gallery of Fluid Mechanics you have to agree that their description is accurate, whether you understand the phenomena or not:

One of the most attractive features of fluid mechanics is the beauty of the flows one encounters. Whether one is observing vortex streets, the potential flow around an airfoil or body, shock refraction or diffraction, or waves breaking on a beach the aesthetic appeal of fluid mechanics is impossible to deny.

I’m particularly drawn to the aviation portions of the gallery, but it wasn’t hard to find compelling images in almost all portions of the site. Pretty damn cool…

Michael Jackson, Sage?! Oh, And The RIAA Sucks

In the wake of the RIAA’s recent announcement that it is embarking on a series of law suits against file sharers (see my earlier post), I am very surprised that Michael Jackson actually stands out as a voice of reason, recently saying,

I am speechless about the idea of putting music fans – mostly teenagers – in jail for downloading music… It is wrong to illegally download, but the answer cannot be jail. Here in America we create new opportunities out of adversity, not punitive laws, and we should look to new technologies … for solutions. This way, innovation continues to be the hallmark of America. It is the fans that drive the success of the music business.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying for some time now, that the RIAA should be embracing technology and using it to their advantage rather than stifling it, alienating its core consumer base in the process. Although it is a little scary that I’m agreeing with something Michael Jackson said. :-p

Meanwhile, CNN reports that “The music industry has won at least 871 federal subpoenas against computer users suspected of illegally sharing music files on the Internet, with roughly 75 new subpoenas being approved each day.” What bothers me is that “In some cases, subpoenas cite as few as five songs as ‘representative recordings’ of music files available for downloading from these users.” I haven’t been using P2P file-sharing programs as often recently anyway, but these recent developments certainly make me think twice about it, which pisses me off to no end.

The new version of Kazaa Lite, my favorite file sharing application, purports to block IP addresses used by the RIAA to search P2P networks and can block people from viewing your entire shared file list, but whether this is enough protection from their crusade is debatable. I refuse to not share files while using Kazaa, as that is exactly what the RIAA is hoping users will do. However, I only share a small amount of fairly obscure recordings that are hopefully unlikely to attract attention, while still giving something back to the community. I’m still pissed off that it has come to this, though. My advice is to be careful out there and visit the EFF site dedicated to the file-sharing issue to see what you can do.

Purple Polar Bear?

purple polar bearAnanova reports that “A purple polar bear has become a big attraction at an Argentinian zoo. Officials claim medication given to the bear to treat a case of dermatitis is responsible for the colour change.” Talk about not fitting in…
